You now have three new high-technology ways to walk beautiful Bannockburn Conservation Area and learn about the natural world around you thanks to the ‘Walk a Mile Trail Information Project.’ The project allows people to download a professionally-narrated, self-guided tour onto an iPod or MP3 audio player from a website or CD. They can also track the distance they walk with a pedometer and go to environmental information locations with the help of a Global Positioning System (GPS) tracking device. Permanent plaques are also located at stations along the self-guided tour route. The project was made possible by the Ontario Ministry of Health Promotion, Communities in Action Fund as well as the Municipality of Central Huron, Municipality of Bluewater, TD Friends of the Environment Foundation, the Huron Stewardship Council, the Bayfield Ratepayers’ Association and the Huron County Clean Water Project. “It’s very exciting that people have a reason to be more active, find out about the natural world around them and develop an appreciation for this valuable ecosystem,” said Ray Letheren, of Friends of the Bayfield River. “The support and vision of our funding partners has allowed us to create a leading-edge program that will get people moving and discover the environmental importance of Bannockburn Conservation Area and the Bayfield River.” The former Bannockburn Wildlife Area is located east of Bayfield and from there or Brucefield travel on County Road 3 and turn north at Bannockburn Line. Early morning walks will reward you with sightings of deer, grouse and numerous songbirds. Bannockburn is home to six different natural communities: wet meadow, eastern white cedar, deciduous forest, old field and mixed scrub and marsh. Hunting and motorized vehicles are not permitted. The trail starts with a boardwalk that is wheelchair accessible. The popular Bannockburn Fall Hike is held annually on the first Sunday of October. The ‘Walk a Mile’ self-guided tour compact discs (CDs) are available at Huron County libraries, schools and some public institutions. Area schools have also taken part part in this effort to become more fit and environmentally-aware. “Physical activity and protection of the Bayfield River are both increasingly important and ‘Walk a Mile’ moves us many miles towards the accomplishment of these vital goals,” said Julie Hicks, ABCA Conservation Education Specialist. Bannockburn Fall Hike usually draws hundreds of walking and nature enthusiasts and visitors are asked to BYOM (Bring Your Own Mug) each October and enjoy a glass of complimentary apple cider.
